Purpose: - Responsible for all legal matters, including product liability, safety and warranty litigation, business, corporate, insurance, dealer, employee, privacy and antitrust. Provide strategic legal direction and advice to senior management in all aspects and operations of HMA's business. - Responsible for strategic management and direction of complex risks and crisis management. - Responsible for negotiating and procuring product liability insurance for HMC--and overseeing all insurance procurements for HMA, including property, company car, product liability, general liability and excess coverage. - Legal advisor to President/CEO and all company executives and divisions. - Responsible for coordination with Government Relations Offices in North America Region - Responsible for performance to budget. - Legal advisor to Hyundai Motor North America regional leadership as well as HMC affiliated companies. - Responsible for keeping HMC informed of significant legal risks. Major Responsibilities: - Legal advice and counsel to senior management on all business matters. - Decision maker on major product liability risks. - Set strategic direction on all litigation risks - product liability, warranty, employment, dealer matters, business, privacy, patent, etc. - Settlement negotiations of major legal matters. - Strategic management and direction of major risks and crisis management. - Responsible for support of Corporate Governance processes. - Budget responsibility for all legal matters. - Lead negotiator for annual product liability insurance for HMC. - Advise HMC regarding significant transactions and activities that might influence Hyundai's market in the United States. - Advise and support HMC executives regarding key business matters in the United States, including document writing, word management and record retention. - Provide government relations and lobbying counsel with strong emphasis on building relationships with Washington DC office to support company priorities and business objectives. - Lead and motivate professional staff. - Legal interface with Hyundai related affiliates and organizations. Authority: - As a senior executive within the US organization, the VP may also be asked to represent the company on a wide range of issues that include industry-related events, governmental regulatory and legislative initiatives, social and environmental questions and challenges, philanthropic responsibilities, and dealer and customer relations. - Significant independent judgment required on major and critical issues - litigation, business, regulatory and government. - Position requires management of department. - Position requires capacity to handle multiple complicated matters simultaneously. - Position requires ability to explain complicated legal issues to management. - Develop strategic direction and lead organization in crisis situations. - Position requires significant analysis and decision making. - Signature authority to approve accounting documents as per Company's signature matrix. - Signature authority on expense reports and time-off reports for direct reports. - Expected to identify and solve significant legal issues related to HMA. - Conduct hiring interviews, make hiring recommendations, and extend approved hiring offers. - Address and counsel direct reports on performance issues and goals. Education: - Must be a high school graduate. - Bachelor's required. - Juris Doctorate degree from ABA approved law school required. Related Experience: - Fifteen plus years' experience in the practice of law, including significant automotive experience. - Technical, medical and engineering background helpful. Skill / Knowledge: - Superior written and oral communication skills. - Technical abilities. - Leadership abilities. - Problem solving abilities. - Decision making abilities. - Familiarity with basic budget and accounting functions. Certification Required: - Member California State Bar required.
